FRANCESCO BUITONI is from Rome and is a seventh generation pasta maker from the Buitoni Pasta & Perugina Chocolate family. He grew up in an environment where eating is breathing and food is air, to be shared by all. To Italians every meal is important to one’s physical and spiritual well-being. As they say in Italy, “one never grows old at the table.” His professional career in food began in NYC working in the kitchen’s of his Zia’s restaurant Al Bacio and his cousin’s restaurant Pasta & Dreams; other restaurant stints included San Domenico, Teodora, Bettola & Gemmelie. He was a wine rep for Mionetto Wines and Panebianco Imports and a sommelier at Mario Batali’s Otto. Once in the Hudson Valley he cooked at Stoney Creek in Tivoli, Gigi in Rhinebeck and Ca’Mea in Hudson. It was then met his future partner & wife Michele.

MICHELE PLATT comes from the great Northeast, born in New Jersey, grew up in Manhattan. Before moving to the Hudson Valley with Francesco she was a filmmaker and worked on such features as Seven, Chocolat, LA Confidential and the Cider House Rules. Once in the Hudson Valley, pregnant, with her passion for style, and Francesco’s love for food, they opened a panini & fresh pasta shop and called it Mercato Tivolio (for the town they met in, Tivoli). After a good run they decided to make a go of an authentic Osteria, a country place in Italy with simple home cooked meals prepared seasonally from local, market fresh products. Mercato Osteria & Enoteca opened in 2007.
They now have three children, Luca, Giacomo & Paolo, and two little dogs, Rufus & Milo.
